Overview:
Workshop access at The Bench is between 10:00am - 4:00pm Wednesday, Thursday & Friday.
There are a limited number of benches available, please contact The Bench.
We recommend providing The Bench with at least one weeks’ notice.
We are smaller than a small business and require more than one day to coordinate.
This is perfect for those wanting to use specialist tools and/ or equipment, a space to focus on your individual projects, or perhaps you need a fully functional workshop with a thriving jewellery community to work from and take a break from the solitude of your own private studio. We cater to all levels, however, prefer you to have a strong understanding of foundation jewellery making and competent tool usage.
When: 10:00am – 4:00pm (Wednesday, Thursday & Friday)

What to bring:
All materials and consumables required to make your work.
(Some precious metal, stones, base metal and consumables are available for purchase).
What is provided:
We have most tools/ equipment you might need - please contact ahead of your session if you need something in particular.
A great community vibe.
Kitchen area including fridge, microwave, sandwich press.
If you think you need advice or guidance? Or having trouble with a tricky soldering join? No sweat! An expert tutor is on site for trouble shooting and/ or bouncing ideas on Tuesdays (daytime) and Thursdays (evening). If you do not have experience in jewellery making, please do not book in to either of these. Get in touch and speak with one of our team to find the best jewellery class for you.
Prerequisite
This opportunity is for competent students who do not require assistance from a tutor. If unsure, please discuss with The Bench prior to booking.
Course Objectives
It is expected that you already are familiar and have been inducted on jewellery equipment in our workshop. If you are new to The Bench, please arrange to arrive earlier for OH&S induction. You must be reasonably competent at soldering and basic jewellery making.
The jeweller on site is available for questions and assistance E.g. “Where do I find the disc cutter?”
Course Outcomes
The Bench provides this time for you to work on your own projects. Should you wish to discuss ideas or troubleshoot, please don’t hesitate to get in touch prior to arrival and confirm that what you need can be provided.
What’s Included
You will need to bring your own consumables – saw blades, solder and emery. Please bring any materials you need. A small selection of materials and consumables will be available to buy from your tutor at cost price. (Please bring cash for any purchases).
If you are working with gold, you are required to supply your own gold solder. If you require specific tools, equipment or material, please contact The Bench.

THE BENCH, Joynton Avenue Creative Centre

The Bench is located at the exquisite historic site, Joynton Avenue Creative Centre in Green Square, and is easily accessed by bus, train (Green Square Station), ride or walk. The Bench cultivates inclusive, creative and accessible spaces for everyone to have the opportunity to feel safe and welcomed.
The building has full wheelchair accessibility, ramp access from street and park entrances, internal lift for access to upper levels and a unisex accessible toilet on each level.
All the tools & machinery you need are available at the venue; including an apron. Please bring materials and ideas for your individual project. You may want to buy further materials from our metal suppliers – your tutor will provide you with supplier information.
Hair tie: If you have long hair, please bring along something to tie it back with
Closed in shoes: We will be working with hot, sharp and heavy tools, so please wear shoes, which will protect your feet. Avoid wearing loose flowing garments.
Sketch book/note book/ pen and/or pencil: Please bring along a notebook for your own notes and design ideas. Notes will be provided to complement the techniques you will be learning but you may wish to make your own notes.
Remember: If you use glasses for reading and /or close up work please remember to bring them along.
Please be aware that we are a very small operation. Voicemails are listened to once a week on a Wednesday. We understand that you may prefer to talk with a real live human, and we are very happy to speak with you too. However, we politely ask that you schedule a suitable time. Instead of leaving a voicemail, we recommend sending a brief audio text or text message with your enquiry. We are very prompt when replying to a text message or email.
As part of Joynton & 107 Projects, The Bench will provide subsidised courses to residents in the City of Sydney area. There are a limited number of subsidized places per course. For further information please contact The Bench.
